Finale of Glory

Tap That MTG Show

In this week’s show, we do a Limited Rewind and talk about what we saw at the prerelease this weekend. What cards surprised us, what cards kicked butt and what cards let us down. How did your prerelease go?

Our podcast is available on iTunes, Google Play, Podbean and now Spotify!

How Do Planeswalkers work?

Magic News

Besides the prerelease weekend, there was some big news coming from Mythic Invitational II in London. This being that one of the professional players was caught cheating. Yuuya Watanabe was disqualified when markings were found on his card sleeves.

As of Tuesday, he denies these allegations and explains what happened. You can find more details here:

This has many people in the community on his side and many who don’t believe him. Regardless, it is never a good thing for someone in his standing to be accused of something like this.

In any sport, there are always these kinds of issues. There is some really big money on the line here and a lot of expectations and pressures put on these players. This doesn’t excuse the fact that cheating is not cool, but it does make me have some compassion towards them. If he did do it, I am sorry that he felt so much pressure that he had to stoop to something so risky and unsportsmanlike. Hopefully, he did not and this will be a lesson learned, regardless of the outcome.

Do you have an opinion on this issue? Do you feel that this is more common than we know about?

Magic Card of the Week

On to Glory!

Well, one of my favorite cards for the set came in one of my packs – The Finale of Glory did indeed bring me glory … well, almost! I had my best tournament yet at Sunday’s prerelease. I got up to fifth place this time with a 3-1-0 finish.

This was the ONLY mythic card I had in my deck as all my others were disappointing for limited play with the exception of Rhonas (whoot!) but I just could not get much green happening for my deck.

Instead, I focused on strong removal and evasion commons and uncommons. Thankfully, it worked pretty well!

How did you do at your prerelease? Are you going to Draft this weekend?

MTG Arena Madness

The season ended on MTGA this week. I ended up being at Platinum Level 4 which was pretty cool. I fell down a lot last week – from Level 2 – sadly.

My Selesnya team was tired. Coming up though, I am tweaking it with some lovely new cards from War of the Spark.

I have been working on a few games this week and Ajani and Pledge of Unity have certainly boosted the spirits of Emmara and her friends. Stay tuned for more grinding news next week! We’ll see if I can get back up there! I’ll post a deck list when I get it worked out a bit better.

Draft Weekend is coming up and I always pore through Luis Scott Vargas articles on what he thinks are the best cards for draft/limited play. He rates each card and tells us why. Check out the posts here:

The Wolf Pack Arrives!

So many exciting spoilers this week! For me, the biggest was the new Tolsimir, Friend to Wolves card!
I’ll be creating several new Wolf Pack decks of various formats! Whoot! I used to play wolves all the time! There is a new Arlinn, Voice of the Pack to go with it as well. The new  Vivien, Champion of the Wilds will be a must have for my decks too!

Magic Card of the Week

I haven’t heard if Jaya Ballard will be back in The War of the Spark, but I certainly hope so! Last year, I played a deck I called “Dirty Gramma”. It was a fun “burn to your face” red and black deck that featured no creatures, just Jaya Ballard and Chandra, Torch of Defiance.

I’m revisiting my Dirty Gramma deck with some new cards and some old ones I dug up (and got some fun red promos to use!) See the deck list at the bottom of this post!

MTG Arena Madness

The Selesnya fight continues for me on MTG Arena. Slowly grinding my way back up to Platinum since the season changed and I got put back down in Gold again.

An interesting … actually, EXTREMELY annoying deck that I’ve been fighting against on Arena is one that uses Dovin’s Acuity + Mastermind’s Acquisition + Unmoored Ego (Esper Acuity).

It is a really long fight that I am having lots of trouble with.

Here’s an example deck from MTGGoldfish:

Have you played this deck? What are some of the ways you’re using it and/or fighting against it? Do you think it’s a viable deck in real life Standard Meta? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Get this loaded on your phone: and then add it to your icons because you will use it ALL the time! It’s got a very powerful search engine that allows you to drill down to the card that you’re trying to find.

Right now, I use it to quickly see the ongoing War of the Spark preview cards. Images are clear and there are a ton of tech/links to use on each of the cards.

What have you been up to this week in Magic the Gathering? Any favorite cards or decks? I’d love to hear about them! See you next week!

April Magic

I’ve decided to change my blog to be about one of my passions: Magic the Gathering! This has become a challenge and a very fun past-time for me and I would like to share my adventures, thoughts and overall excitement for this crazy game that my kids and Lesley got me in to.

Lesley and I are getting pretty competitive about this game and love to talk about it. We decided to start creating some content to share with our Magic loving peeps! Watch for those videos & podcasts to come!!

Each week, I plan to share:

  • Magic news that I think is cool
  • My card of the Week
  • My latest MTG Arena deck list that I’m messing with
  • IRL deck list that I’m playing lately at FNM or other events
  • MTG tools that I have fallen in love with!
  • Our latest video/podcast of course!

Video/Podcast This Week!

Watch for these videos to be posted after our first recording tomorrow! So excited! I’ll add those to this section of the posts as we move forward!

Magic News

Chandra cheering us on for our first Magicfest!

This weekend Lesley and I went to our first official Magicfest put on by Wizards of the Coast in Calgary. We played in a side event to see how we’d do – both of us did well! Lesley was 1-1-1 with her Green Stompy and I was 2-0 with my Selesnya ladies! Go team Green!

In other news…

What about that War of the Spark trailer!!?? There are no words…

Magic Card of the Week

“Life gain is irrelevant …”

~ some Magic players who don’t think it can help me win games 😛

My GW-Emmara’s March deck has been doing pretty well in real life and gets me to Platinum on Arena these days. Part of that is this card and others that keep me in the battle with life-gain. Enough time to build my army to over-run my opponent.

The other surprising little benefit of this card is when people steal my cards to play on their side of the table and they have to give it back to me because Trostani is in play. I love it when that happens!

MTG Arena Madness

I’m annoying a lot of people with my UB-Haunted Thoughts deck on MTG Arena!

I use a lot of discard and destroy cards to control the board until I can get this fun vampire out. Then the Haunting begins as this grows bigger and bigger.

My favorite match-ups are those that put cards in their graveyards themselves. It’s so nice that they help this guy grow!

See the MTG Arena Deck List here:

And of course, there’s that life gain thing again…and vampires…why is it that all of my decks have at least one vampire?
